Converting in only three steps
AIFF files are mainly found in the Apple world: software such as GarageBand, Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro typically use the AIFF format to save audio files on macOS. Apple has been relying on its proprietary audio format for decades. The .AIFF format is also frequently used when importing audio CDs to Mac or voice memos. The quality of .AIFF files is often excellent, but they are large and have limited usability outside the Apple world.
What are AIFF files?
AIFF stands for Audio Interchange File Format and was developed by Apple in 1988. It stores audio data using the PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) method, which means that the quality is exactly the same as that of an audio CD. The disadvantage is the storage requirement: one minute of stereo audio at CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16 bit) takes up around 10 MB. The equivalent of AIFF in Windows is WAV files. WAV files are also uncompressed and of high quality, but use a slightly different internal structure. Converting AIFF to MP3
Converting to MP3 significantly reduces the size of AIFF files: MP3 compression removes sound information that is barely perceptible to the human ear, significantly reducing the storage requirements. One minute shrinks from about 10 MB to about 1.5 MB (at 192 kbit/s). However, some of the information is irretrievably lost during conversion. As a rule, the difference at 192 kbit/s is negligible for most applications. Apart from storage requirements, MP3 files are much more widely supported; almost all software and devices support MP3 files. For lossless conversion, we offer conversion from AIFF to FLAC, for example.
